Project scope

The scope of this project has not been specifically identified, but funds would be used to provide amenities to the park, including a possible picnic shelter and picnic tables and additional benches. A Parks and Recreation VIP Committee would be formed to determine specific projects.

Project need

Spenard Beach Park is located within the Lake Hood Seaplane Base boundaries, but is managed by the Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department. This park has a long history of being used as parkland by the Turnagain and Spenard communities, and is a popular, public viewing area of float planes that take off and land at the adjacent Lake Spenard waterbody. It is conveniently located near numerous lodging amenities, so tourists often visit the park. Despite its popularity, the park lacks appropriate amenities that would improve the user experience and enhance the Turnagain and adjacent Spenard neighborhoods.

This project is Turnagain Community Council's #6-ranked Parks & Recreation project. Please note that 1) TCC donated funds to the Anchorage Park Foundation in 2016 that were earmarked for this park. Specifically, we requested funding to go toward an additional picnic table and dog waste station. 2) The draft Lake Hood Seaplane Base Master Plan Update includes a project proposal to enhance viewing areas in this park. Please ADD the following after the last Project Scope sentence: "This effort should be coordinated with the Airport, as the Lake Hood Seaplane Base Master Plan includes a project to enhance viewing areas to Spenard Beach Park."
